The word Noel comes from the French word Noël meaning “Christmas” The well known Christmas carol “The first Noel” dates back to the 16th or 17th century. The song as we know it today was first published in “Some Ancient Christmas Carols” in 1823.

The lyrics begin:

The first Noel, the angel did say,
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep,
On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.
